Background of the Study:
Urban renewal programs and housing resettlement initiatives have been pivotal in reshaping the urban landscape of Enugu South. These initiatives are designed to revitalize deteriorating urban areas, improve living conditions, and stimulate economic growth (Chinwe, 2023). However, such programs often lead to the displacement of long-established communities and create socio-economic disruptions. Housing resettlement, as a component of urban renewal, has sparked debates over its effectiveness in preserving community cohesion while modernizing urban infrastructure (Ikechukwu, 2024). The study critically examines the impact of these programs on local communities, highlighting issues such as inadequate compensation, loss of social networks, and the erosion of local identity (Nkem, 2025). By analyzing policy frameworks, stakeholder experiences, and urban development outcomes, the research seeks to assess whether the intended benefits of urban renewal truly outweigh the social costs incurred by affected residents. This investigation incorporates perspectives from urban planners, community leaders, and residents, providing a comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between urban modernization and social displacement.
Statement of the Problem:
Urban renewal and housing resettlement in Enugu South have led to contentious outcomes, including community displacement and loss of heritage. Residents often face insufficient compensation and inadequate housing alternatives, resulting in social and economic instability (Chinwe, 2023). These issues necessitate a critical evaluation of the program’s implementation and its broader implications for urban communities (Ikechukwu, 2024).
